The Story of The Violinist

Synopsis

Michael Shuster arrives in Chicago as a child with his physician parents in the wave of Soviet-era Ukrainian-Jewish emigration to the United States. Groomed to become a concert violinist, he grows up between two worlds — the discipline of the conservatory and the raw pull of Chicago's Eastern European underworld.

As adulthood closes in, Michael is drawn into the orbit of a Chicago-area Eastern European crime family, where his talent, his temperament, and his loyalties are tested against violence, loss, and the immigrant's compulsion to belong.

Setting

The Violinist is set in 1970s Chicago, when Ukrainian-Jewish immigrants — most of them scientists, engineers, doctors, artists, and families escaping Soviet persecution, alongside a small unvetted criminal fringe — reshaped the fabric of the city.

Tone

Authentic, character-driven, and tonally disciplined — built in the tradition of Goodfellas, Once Upon a Time in America, The Departed, Scarface, Heat, Casino, Bugsy, and The Godfather.
